Match the configuration to the property

Powerwall selection depends on existing equipment, backup requirements, site layout and current Tesla guidance. Compatibility and product claims should be confirmed for the specific vehicle, battery and inverter configuration.

Site and backup requirements

  1. Map the existing solar and switchboard

    Record the existing inverter, array, phases, metering, export settings and available installation locations before choosing the Powerwall configuration.

  2. Define the loads that must remain available

    Whole-home and selected-load backup produce different switchboard, power and operating requirements. Motor starting and simultaneous demand should be assessed.

  3. Model energy and power separately

    Usable energy determines duration, while output power determines which loads can operate together. Both need to be tested against the property profile.

Compatibility and WA connection

  1. Check generation and expansion compatibility

    Mixed Powerwall generations and expansion units require current Tesla compatibility guidance. Product family names alone do not establish a supported configuration.

  2. Confirm WA network and program settings

    The final system must satisfy the relevant connection, export, supported-product and virtual power plant requirements in addition to Tesla documentation.

Can Powerwall 3 be installed with an existing solar inverter?

Tesla states that Powerwall 3 supports major solar inverter brands and a range of existing system sizes. The specific inverter, phases, network settings and site design still require assessment before compatibility is confirmed.

Can Powerwall 2 and Powerwall 3 be used together?

Tesla publishes a dedicated backwards-compatibility pathway. Supported equipment, firmware and configuration requirements should be checked in the current Tesla documentation for the proposed system.

What is the stated energy capacity of Powerwall 3?

Tesla's current Australian support material states 13.5 kWh of energy capacity per Powerwall 3. Output and backup capability depend on the system configuration and local conditions.

Registration and owner support

Tesla requires registration through the Tesla app and connection to the property Wi-Fi network. WA program participation can impose additional connectivity requirements.
